INVESTING IN MARKETING
Part of the culture at W M Donald is to invest in the best when it comes to plant and equipment: Trimble total stations for onsite surveying; Volvo crawler excavators and more.
W M Donald is also investing in marketing. It has engaged Mearns & Gill, Scotland’s longest-established creative agency, to refresh its marketing communications. The new website was launched at the end of August and a brochure featuring case studies will shortly be going to print. Mearns & Gill is also working on a short video for the Build It exhibition.
The Mearns and Gill team is led by Isla Stewart:
‘W M Donald has quality throughout its organisation and a sense of ambition and purpose that drives it forward. What became clear during our discussions and workshops is that it is the people – the team – that is the heartbeat of W M Donald’s success. This team ethos enables it to build strong working relationships with its customers, many of whom have been with W M Donald for many years.
Our work has led us to develop a new strapline for the company: ‘From the ground up’. From a functional perspective the strapline reflects the fact that, whether it is a road, a sewer, a utility network, a bridge or earthworks, the ground on which W M Donald works is improved in some shape or form.
More importantly, the straplines captures W M Donald’s organic growth over forty years. It reflects the firm foundations on which the company is built. A successful project works ‘... from the ground up’.’

Isla Stewart – Mearns & Gill
Linking the Mearns & Gill creative team with W M Donald’s senior management is the responsibility of Account Manager, Isla Stewart.
Isla studied psychology at university and subsequently built a portfolio of skills and experience in retail management, sales and marketing. She joined Mearns & Gill two years ago when they purchased the Trades Award and Oil & Gas Conference events. Isla is the driving force behind the new Build It Conference and Exhibition and has recruited W M Donald as a lead sponsor.
Isla has recently joined the board of Mental Health Aberdeen, a long-established charity that offers advice and counselling. ‘I’m hoping to help the charity with its fund raising and marketing. It is launching a ‘Mental health first aider’ scheme in 2019 which I believe can make a huge difference across all sectors including construction.’
In addition to W M Donald, Mearns and Gill’s clients include Jamieson & Carry (jewellers), TAQA Bratani (Energy) and Malcolm Allan Housebuilders.
