  SUMMER 2022 7
   South College Street
W M Donald is starting work on road and junction improvements at South College Street in Aberdeen. The client is Aberdeen City Council.
South College Street (A93) runs alongside the main railway line into Aberdeen. The road passes twice under the railway and the area
is known locally as the ‘fish precinct’ as the arches under the railway viaduct
were historically associated with fish processing.
The project comprises a package of works including junction improvements and road
widening. The aim is to increase capacity and improve traffic flow on this busy section
of the city’s road network. The works will also create shared and segregated facilities
for pedestrians and cyclists alongside the carriageway. They form part of the Aberdeen
City Council’s ‘City Centre Masterplan’.
Scott Dickie and his team are using drawings of the bridge and viaduct from 1903 as
a reference for the works. Among many fascinating details, the drawings show that wooden piles were used to support some of the viaduct arches.
The continued value of the drawings shows the importance of creating as-built drawings on every project.
