Ian Gray, Operations Manager, accepted the award on behalf of W M Donald at the black tie dinner on Friday 10th June.
In our submission, we emphasized that our health and safety performance has continuously improved year-on-year despite an increase in turnover and involvement in major projects such as Prime Four and Chapelton of Elsick. In 2015, led by Eilidh Cameron, we achieved OHSAS 18001 accreditation for our safety management systems and also implemented our ‘START with safety’ initiative: Stop, Think, Assess the Risk, Take action.
The main focus of our submission, and the element which particularly impressed the judges, was the £400,000 investment in our suction excavator. David Morrison, Managing Director, commented that the suction excavator had had a major impact on both the W M Donald workforce and customers alike:
‘The suction excavator is big! It is a daily visual statement to all those working on site that we are committed to their health and safety, and we’re willing to invest to achieve that.
In terms of hard, measurable achievements, utility strikes have been significantly reduced and clients are now endorsing suction excavation techniques by specifying them in their tender documents and plans.
At W M Donald we view the delivery of safer working conditions for our workforce, clients and general public as a crusade. Winning the award will further energise our activities and is industry recognition of our innovative approach to health and safety.’
